How to Care for (and Compost) Your Bamboo Toothbrush
11 Feb 2025 · 3 min read

A bamboo toothbrush asks almost nothing of you — but a 10-second habit will make it last its full three months in perfect condition, and a 30-second ritual will return it to the earth afterwards.
Caring for it
- Rinse after every brush and shake off the water — same as any toothbrush
- Store it upright in a dry cup or holder, never flat on a wet surface or inside a closed cabinet
- Keep it out of standing water: bamboo is water-repellent, not waterproof
- Replace every 3 months, exactly as your dentist recommends for any brush
Composting the handle
When the bristles are worn, pluck them out with a pair of pliers (they come out in a few gentle pulls). The nylon bristles go into your dry waste or plastic recycling where your city accepts them — they are not biodegradable, and we say that openly. The bamboo handle? Drop it in your garden soil, a compost bin, or a community compost pit. It breaks down naturally, typically within weeks to a few months depending on conditions.
The second life trick
Before composting, old brushes earn their keep: shoe and grout scrubbing, jewellery cleaning, marking your garden rows, even a month more as the bathroom-cleaning brush. A bamboo handle's useful life rarely ends when the bristles do.
